Reviewers Say This ‘Hidden Treasure’ Self-Scratching Toy Brings Cats ‘Endless Joy’

Comprised of a brush with satisfyingly stiff bristles and a holder, the toy attaches onto walls, corners and furniture to scratch and love on your cat whenever they’re in the mood (and whenever you’re not).

“In one evening, this has help[ed] [my cat] to feel more enriched and loved, and not vocally harass us every 5 minutes for scritches or belly rubs,” wrote a reviewer named Sabrina.

“One secured to the wall, it was like watching magic unfold. My cat took to the brush immediately,” said another person, Kelly. “It didn’t take long for me to realize that this was the best purchase I’d made on Amazon yet … [and] brought endless joy to my furry friend.”

“Our four overlords love this thing,” joked another, Chris.

The toy serves a more practical function, too. As your cat scratches against the brush, the bristles collect loose fur from their coat, which is “fantastic for reducing shedding around the house,” wrote one reviewer. This sneaky deshedding ability has also helped some reviewers reduce the frequency of their cats’ hairballs.

The tool comes with adhesive strips for mounting, though reviewers say it’s worthwhile to invest in stronger adhesives (Command strips repeatedly came up in reviews; one person recommended hook-and-loop Command strips in particular, saying they “work like a charm and have kept this scratcher up for five years and counting”). You can also use screws with the piece.

The package also includes dried catnip that you can sprinkle into the brush’s perforated side compartment to help encourage shyer cats to try it out.

“I have a blind cat that is very touch sensitive … To put it mildly, she loves this thing. It hasn’t gotten much of her hair on it, but she is a shorthaired cat so that may have something to do with it … Especially due to her lack of sight, I tend to worry about her not getting enough mental stimulation. So far I think this is probably the best thing I have bought for her to enrich her environment. I’m sure that sighted cats would love it just the same. Essentially, it gives them a way of getting scratches even when you’re not around. And they’re completely in control of it so they can get scratched exactly where they want.” — Breanna

“My kitty gets anxious in the middle of the night and used to wake us up asking for scritchies. We got her one of these, and she loves it! She uses it to groom herself (especially the sides of her face), and it seems to calm her. She loved it so much that we bought one for a friend’s cat, and her cat loves it as well. It has a little spot to put catnip, and we put some in there at first, but our cat seems to love it even without the catnip.” — Cathy Trivigno

“This is a great item. Took seconds to put up. Unobtrusive, good quality. Spraying a little catnip extract on the groomer got their attention and all 3 cats are enjoying my purchase. Beats rubbing against the wooden moldings, table legs, etc. Happy with my low cost investment.” — Margaret F. Kubena

“Cats are gonna cat. My wife and I have four cats, all with their own personalities and preferences. Trouble, my oldest, LIVES for brushing―but because both of her servants are allergic to her, we don’t spend half of every single day giving her what she wants. Enter the self groomer: An affordable, easily installed device that lets all four of our overlords get a bit of the ol’ brushy brushy whether we’re asleep, away, or just not able to serve them. This is a wonderful thing to have. Seriously … This self groomer gets five stars because all four of our kitties use it at least every other day: an impressive stat considering their fickle nature.” — Chris Dixon
