Dad Jumps Overboard To Save Young Daughter Who Fell From Fourth Deck Of Disney Cruise

The Disney Dream was returning to Fort Lauderdale from the Bahamas when the emergency code for “man overboard” sounded on the ship, The Street noted.

“The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water,” a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson told USA Today in a statement. “We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.”

Passengers on social media commended the crew for “immediately” launching life preservers and a rescue boat.

Passenger Kevin Furuta said, “A girl fell overboard from the 4th deck & her dad went in after her … Thankfully the DCL rescue team was on it immediately and both were saved!”

But one report said the man treaded water with his daughter for up to 20 minutes before the boat arrived. Some passengers told CBS the pair treaded water for at least 10 minutes.

Video shared by passenger Janice Martin-Asuque shows a small lifeboat approaching two bobbing heads in the water before the pair are scooped up. No injuries were reported.

Newsweek cited stats from Cruise Lines International Association indicating that there are 20 to 25 overboard incidents a year on passenger ship lines. Boarding Area found the survival rate to be between 17% and 25% from data collected between 2009 and 20019.
